Kestrel Weather Instruments have become known worldwide as the most dependable and durable handheld weather instruments on the market. We are often asked which meter is the best one to buy? Well, that depends on a multitude of factors. The first being price. Secondly would be what measurements do you require? Different models offer different environmental measurements. Some specialty meters also do calculations specific to it's job function such as the Kestrel 5500FW Fire Weather Meter. With the 5500FW Fire Weather Meter, you will get all of the same environmental readings as the 5500 Weather Meter as well as FDFM and PIG calculations. These two calculations are specific to Wildland Firefighters. There are two main categories of Kestrel Meters. The first being the Basic Meters and the second being the Advanced Meters. All Meters from the 1000 to the 3550 are considered basic. This doesn't mean they are cheaply made. On the contrary, they are just as durable, waterproof and drop proof as the Advanced Meters and use the same sensors.
The Kestrel Basic Meters have a large, high contrast easy to read LCD screen and just three buttons to make your selections. Most are backlit as well.
The Kestrel Advanced Meters all start with the number 5, such as the Kestrel 5000. The Advanced line of Meters will all log date and time stamped environmental data into memory. This historical data can be viewed on the Meter itself or can be downloaded to either a PC or MAC computer using the Kestrel Data Transfer Cable or with the LiNK (Bluetooth) models, data can be wirelessly transferred to a smartphone using the Kestrel LiNK app or the newly released Kestrel app. Once the data is downloaded into the Kestrel app, you can send the date and time stamped data using your phones email with just a click of a button. This data formatted as a CSV file which most spreadsheet programs can easily open. Both the standard and LiNK enabled 5 series meters can use the Kestrel Data Transfer Cable.
